Student Loan Forgiveness Expansion to Benefit Over 22,000 Borrowers
The U.S. Department of Education has resumed student loan forgiveness after nearly a year-long pause, approving discharges for 11,549 borrowers under Income-Contingent Repayment and Pay As You Earn plans. An additional 10,873 borrowers in the Income-Based Repayment plan will also receive relief.
Eligible borrowers began receiving notification emails last week, with discharges processing over coming months. Income-driven repayment plans typically forgive remaining balances after 20-25 years of payments.
This relief comes as many Americans struggle with decades-long student debt burdens that force spending cuts in other areas. Loan forgiveness enables recipients to redirect funds toward savings or family needs.
